Some Netflix films claim to be action-packed, but very few deliver quite like The Old Guard. The movie is based on the graphic novel series of the same name and delivers non-stop jaw-dropping action sequences. Charlize Theron once again reminds audiences across the globe how much of a badass she is. Kiki Layne plays Theron’s protege who is trying to make sense of what is happening to her. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s latest project strikes a necessary balance between action and depth. The Old Guard doesn’t compromise it’s narrative for slick action sequences. Prince-Bythewood’s steady direction with Greg Rucka’s compelling storyline ends up being a formidable combination.
The Old Guard centers around a group of mercenaries who have this mysterious power of never dying. Andy (Theron) leads her team into a last-minute rescue mission and is set up. Their abilities are now common knowledge to the rest of the world. With the help of Nile (Layne), they must seek the ones who are trying to monetize this power by any means possible. The film ends up being a fascinating look at the burdens we carry. This team has been fighting for hundreds of years, but at some point, it becomes too much.
The chemistry of this ensemble was top-notch to match the cinematography as well. The narrative didn’t come off as an afterthought, as is the case in some action movies. Every decision in the film seems purposeful, and the result is a positive impact on the overall quality of the piece. While there are certain elements that someone could nitpick(as in any Netflix Film), at the end of the day, The Old Guard is entertaining as hell. That’s good enough for me.
